Judgement. Hans Memling’s “The Last Judgement”
Andrzej Nowakowski
Everything in this story is incredible, mysterious and thrilling. The history of Hans Memling’s “Last Judgement” is a long list of questions that are either difficult to answer or have no answer at all. We know more and more, yet are increasingly troubled both by the mystery of the circumstances in which one of the greatest masterpieces of the Late Middle Ages was produced and by its turbulent later history. There is no other painting with such a dramatic history, even to the point of its creator being unknown for centuries.

The Art of Private Devotion in 1450-1530“ (National Museum in Gdańsk, 1 December 2017–28 February 2018, curated by Dr. hab. Marcin Kaleciński Prof. UG), presents a phenomenon of religious art in the Late Middle Ages: art that was produced outside of the liturgy and official worship, without any direct Church control, birthed from an emotional need for religious connection.
